“Meg!” she called, “Got your email I’m coming to your going away cookout!” I smiled and cheered, raising my water bottle to her before heading on towards home. I called out to the hostess, a local furniture maker and friend from my 40-day-6am-yoga-class. We exchanged good mornings and I jogged on through Carrier Park.Īfter traversing the park, I ran the long haul up State Street to Haywood Rd, and as I passed by Sunny Point Cafe ( grateful for my handheld-water bottle and reasonable ponytail this time). I was surprised to see both of my neighbors several miles from our homes early on a Sunday morning. As he looked up to say “good morning” we both grinned with surprise–it was my next-door-neighbor from the other side, whose daughter owns our rental house. A few minutes later, on the greenway by the French Broad, I spoke to an older man who was walking with his head down. She proudly announced that she was running 10 miles and I cheered for her. There I passed my next-door-neighbor, also a runner, who was jogging in the opposite direction. I turned off my music and listened to the birds, crickets, and my breath as I ran in my ‘barefoot’ shoes through the sticky mud.Īt the end of the greenway I took a quick turn by the interstate and down a seldom used windy road to the next greenway. I ran from my house, cut across the neighborhood baseball field, and after a couple of urban miles, found the entrance to my favorite Greenway - a path through the woods alongside a slow, brown creek that runs off of the French Broad River.

I set off into the cool, overcast morning without my GPS watch and with no pacing plan, relieved for a moment that I was not in training and could just run. But this mornings, I got up early and decided to forgo shoving my life into liquor store boxes in favor of a long run. With no training plan, no race on the horizon, and no excuse to cram in workouts where there is really no time, I’ve been missing out on my long runs, rides, and swims. We are packing loading up for Chapel Hill so that I can start grad school in a couple of weeks.
